Fresh Asian Bottle Gourd (Doodhi / Lauki)- imported weekly from Asia

Native to Africa and originating over 10,000 years ago, Bottle gourd is a vegetable belonging to the cucurbitaceae family. In India, Bottle gourd is known as Lauki or Sorakaaya. While in China, it is known as Opo, Hul and Moa Gua. The fruit of this vegetable is harvested young and has smooth light green skin and white flesh, similar to that of courgettes. 

Bottle gourd is a highly nutritious vegetable which provides a range of nutrients such as vitamin C and B, folate, iron, zinc, calcium and more. Notably, it’s vitamin C and zinc properties are believed to help regulate blood sugar levels and is popularly consumed in juiced beverages across India for this health benefit. It can also be added to curries, soups, stews and slow roasted or baked to serve as a side dish.
