The Yak freely follows the normadic families high up on the Mongolian steppe north of the Himalayas.  Here it is very windy and cold.  Down to -60"F.  the wool is collected at the onset of summer by the herders. 

The Yak wool is warmer than wool, more breathable than cashmere and have a smooth, fine texture.  It also has anti-bacterial and odor resistant qualities.

Cleaning, carding and separating the long coarse, medium soft and ultra soft down wool (the luxury wool) is a long laborious job. It takes longer than cashmere. Preparation is about two months.

To prevent pilling machine wash. Use a wool cycle and non-biological detergent. (Biological detergents contain enzymes which can damage hair. Yak wool is actually a hair not a wool. Hand washing is also an option with very lightweight items however be careful not to kneed the garment like dough, just stir in the warm water and let it soak.
