This solid teak wood 19th century Indian almirah cabinet is an excellent example of the Indo-Portuguese blend of styles. Incredibly stylish and timeless, the sunburst panels are typical of the Portuguese style and have been expertly carved. It has had a later frame and surround built to make it freestanding.
The core Portuguese occupation did not expand beyond Southern India, however, these cabinets can be found in Gujarat further north showing how trade and styles transcended regional borders.
Two partially glazed outward opening doors reveal a large interior space separated by two shelves. This would make an ideal Kitchen cupboard, but would work as a feature in any room.
